The Midges – Skin In The Game

The Midges are Matt Regan and Chris Ruffoni, an upcoming guitar duo who write songs about tripping through the Yorkshire Moors. Working together since 2023, they have self released their debut album, “Not Knowing The Words,” a stripped back folk album which promises mesmerising guitars and imaginative lyrics.

“Skin In The Game” is a beautiful, introspective folk song. It is gentle, poetic, soothing and deeply philosophical. The bright guitars, pacey bells and calming vocals frame the thought provoking question of how to give more and be more vulnerable when life can be so brutal and painful. “How can you put more skin in the game/ When there’s people to blame/When the big, bad wolf wants to cause you pain again and again.” There are some dreamy harmonies in this song which ultimately calls for resilience. A favourite of the band, this track typifies The Midges’ minimalist style and rallies for a redoubling of effort in all aspects of life.

The Laikers – Sometimes

The band enjoy gigging and they have honed their performance skills at venues such as the acclaimed Grayston Unity, Halifax. “Sometimes”, the band’s first single, was released in February this year. “Sometimes” is resoundingly cheerful with its jangly guitars, catchy chorus and sweet melodies. It has a very ‘60s sound, complete with strong vocals and appealing harmonies. The lyrics are very meaningful, discussing the positive and negative aspects of life and the reluctance to ask for help in times of need.”I thought that no
one could help me/ Everybody needs to find their own way/ No one could help, no one but me.” This debut single is a healthy serving of psychedelic tinged indie pop which tackles important themes.
