Maisy Brown
What made you become a musician?
I’ve always been a writer, even before I could play any instruments. When I was 8 years old, I was just writing fun little songs about fairies and princesses and the idea of being Hannah Montana, but over time, it became a way to deal with my emotions and experiences – so I learned to play guitar and piano to back it up.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
Everyone who knows me will probably sigh at my predictability here, but Taylor Swift has always been my biggest inspiration, ever since I started writing, and I 100% still want to be her when I grow up.
Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?
These are insanely long shots, but if I ever happened to be in the same room as Gracie Abrams or Noah Kahan, I truly believe we would whip out some masterpieces. I’m so inspired by their music and lyricism, and the way they put simple things so eloquently. If I ever get famous, those collaborations are top of my list.
Your song “This Is All On You” has been featured on Kirklees Most Wanted, tell us what inspired this track?
‘This Is All On You’ is maybe my favourite song I’ve ever made, and it was actually surprisingly easy to put together – I wrote it in just 45 minutes, and the production came so naturally! It’s about reflecting on a past relationship, and it’s full of heartbreak and bitterness but still sounds so upbeat, which really is my favourite kind of song.
When you’re not doing music, how do you pass the time?
I love being creative – I’m currently learning to crochet (which is proving to be much harder than I expected), and I also spend a lot of time scrapbooking and painting. And buying jewellery, and rewatching sitcoms for the millionth time.

What would be your dream venue to perform in?
I know I should probably say something huge and out-of-reach like Wembley Stadium, but honestly, I just really want to play at The Wardrobe in Leeds. It’s such a small, cosy, intimate venue, and I saw Gracie Abrams there a few years back and it was probably my favourite concert I’ve ever been to – I’ve wanted to play there ever since.
Your latest release “Deep End” is a beautiful, heartwrenching ballad, what is the story behind this song?
Put simply, I wrote this song about watching someone struggle and not knowing how to be there for them. ’Deep End’ is a personal favourite, because it’s the first song I’ve released that I fully produced by myself!

What, in your opinion, makes a good song?
I think one of the best kinds of song, to me, is one with a really dramatic build-up. I’m obsessed with bridges that drop out and then grow into a big finale. And duets with lots of layered harmonies! And of course, I always love a heartbreaking lyric casually thrown in somewhere.
What are your plans for the future? (Gigs, releases, projects etc?)
I’ve been working on my second EP over the last year, and I’m so excited that it’s almost finished and ready to release! I’m also getting back into live performances this year, which is so scary, but so fun. I can’t wait for everyone to hear more of my music, and maybe even come see me play!
What artists are you listening to lately?
I’ve been listening to a lot of small artists recently – The Howl & The Hum, Chloe Slater and Alessi Rose have been on repeat, and I’m so excited to see them live! And I’m still not over The Tortured Poets Department, either.
